I’m looking at installing VMWare in place of my Citrix XenServer’s I’m running at the moment since I have the Citrix VM’s all converted to VMWare format, and thought I would run it on a free license until we finally get a budget for this coming year for it be licensed and NetApp in place for running things properly Do you know if this is possible at the moment with ESXi v5.1? I only see it being available for a 60day license, and don’t see the option for the Free Lic.

I have been using Citrix XenServer for a bit but not in a fully prod state, and have been told we are to switch gears to VMWare from our new HQ office since thats there choice of vm platform and are wanting all of our regional locations to go this way eventually for easier support if required from them. So trying to get ahead of the curve by going this route earlier than waiting on them to approach us at our location. So the other week I have converted what vm I did have that were in the citrix setup already to the vmware format that I had converted from P2V setups. I have the option of loading the servers up with 1.8tb of disk space for now until we do get a SAN put into place so we can then take advantage of vMotion and not have them sitting and being dedicated to be running on a certain server to help with maint. Or any downtime if required. If loaded up with full HDD on the servers does VMWare take over the disk, or can you provision how much space is dedicated for the ESXi and the rest for storage?

I think with Citrix it would take over all the disk space and it couldnt be seperated between the 2 if I recall. Jeff D- I'd look at using the vSphere Hypervisor Michael911 mentioned above while you wait for central IT to give you guidance on which edition of vSphere you should go with. If you don't currently have a SAN you can use, and if there is no intent on getting one anytime soon, the vSphere Essentials suite now comes with the VSA (see my blog on it here:) - which will allow you to turn your internal hard drive into a 'shared' storage device of sorts. Gregg3323 - I'm running the 60 day eval aswell, and you should have received or been provided the free license upon download from the myvmware.com portal and just enter the free key from the vSphere Client of the host servers and just go to Configuration Tab/ Click on Licensed Features under Software/ And then select Edit from the right-hand corner, and then you can enter your Free Lic. Key in there and then repeat on however many host you have. Only thing I have read is you are limited to 32gb of ram per host when running on the Free License and cant have it see anything higher, if you dont have only 32gb available it could not boot up until you change your ram settings in the bios or only have the 32gb sticks installed in your host servers.
